This building of historical significance is located on Pulau Duyong Kecil. It is an architecture wonder built in the 1920’s. While most of the local abodes are normal wooden traditional houses, Kota Lama Duyung was constructed with bricks and wood, based largely on the traditional Malays elements, with a hint of British influence, a burgeoning Islamic consideration. The Kota Lama Fort is considered an experimental building, a legacy of its owner, Dato’ Biji Sura’, a man known for his vision and futuristic ideas. The fortified house is regarded as an architecture wonder of Terengganu was restored as one of the unique attraction and has been transformed into a live museum displaying local artifacts and the historical development of Islam in Terengganu.
From the city centre, take the Sultan Mahmud bridge and turn left to Pulau Duyung exit in the middle of the span. Follow right along the “boat builder’s place” and the house is within the distance.
The Heritage Town Bus plies a regular route to University Malaysia Terengganu and stops at Pulau Duyung. It takes 10-15 minutes walking along the village houses.
By Water Taxi (Bot Penambang)
From the Shahbandar Jetty, the water taxi or ‘Bot Penambang’ takes passengers to Pulau Duyung on a 10 minutes boat ride. From Pulau Duyung jetty, it is within walking distance to Kota Lama Duyung. First Bot Penambang starts at 8.30 am and the last ferry is at 5.30pm. There will no service on Friday unless by prior arrangement.
